Picking up my phone I begin making my rounds of phone calls. “Don’t you worry, Cara. I’m gonna find out what’s happened to your man. Take a deep breath.” I breathe in through my nose and exhale through my mouth. When she calms enough and has picked up my pattern, I then turn my attention back to my contacts on my cell phone. “Someone better pick up their fucking phones pronto,” I sneer as I dial the fifth person from my favorites. Finally, Levi answers his phone on the third ring.
“Can’t talk right now, Ash,” he briskly answers.
“Make fucking time.” My tone is sharp, indicating I’m not in the mood to play games.
“My apologies to the Queen. What can I do for you?” His snotty comeback is nearly my undoing.
“Cara is damn near close to having a panic attack over here. She’s worried about her man, do you have any information I can share with her?” There must be a full moon out tonight, because I can feel the bite of my words as they leave my tongue.
“It’s minor, Ash. Nothing to really be concerned with.” To him it’s minor; to Cara, it could be more than that. These men are going to give me grey hair while I’m still in my prime.
“Care to enlighten me?” If he happened to be standing directly in front of me, I’d make sure he could see exactly how angry I am.
“Hang on, Ash. There’s a lot of damage done in this town. People are hurt and there are still rescue missions happening. Let me find out as much as I can, but I may need to call you back.” Now the unanswered calls are starting to make sense to me.
“I can tell her it’s minor and he’ll be fine?” I question, wanting to reassure Cara as much as I can that her ol’ man’s going to be just fine.
“He’s good, he was hit in the head by a two by four when we were shifting t
hings around trying to rescue a woman who was trapped under some debris. His head bled a lot and we all sorta went postal. He was taken by ambulance; his VP and Enforcer followed him. From what I understand on our latest update he was told to take it easy for a day or two. I think he received a few stitches. I’ll have Wasp or Tic send a message that he needs to call his Ol’ lady.”
“That’ll work. Get back to saving people and enhancing those muscles,” I say in an attempt to try and lighten the mood. I know I’m a hard person to deal with, it’s because I’m protective of those close to me.
“10-4, boss lady.” He hangs up the phone, and I give Cara a smile and thumbs up. The relief is instantaneous. I visibly watch as the tension leaves her shoulders and she slumps down into her chair. With her head in her hands, she quietly sobs and her sisters, new and old, surround her.
DJ
Well, wasn’t that a load of bullshit scaring us all half to death for no reason! These men should be shot for scaring my bestie the way they did. I start to plot my revenge mentally, just in case it’s worse than they’ve said. No way am I going to watch her spiral downward again. Not happening on my watch!
“Can you believe they’d put poor Cara through hell like that for no reason?” Rainey asks as she comes up next to me and grabs a bottle of water from the outdoor fridge.
“I get that you guys are worried and Cara is out of her head with worry, but we have to remember that there’s a lot going on, too. They’re trying to make sure that people are being rescued and that buildings are being secured so that no one else gets hurt. Not a single guy out there is trying to keep us out of the loop,” Skylar says, trying to make sure that we all understand where the guys are coming from.
“Skylar’s right, everyone,” Maddie says, walking up to Skylar and standing next to her. “We’ll keep checking with the guys but we need to remember that they might not always answer when we try to call them.”
“But, the issue I’m having is they shouldn’t have left that initial message in the first damn place. They should’ve left well enough alone until Braxton could call,” I huff.
“In their minds, they wanted to make sure she was aware that there was an issue. We’ll just sit in the afterglow of knowing he’s going to be fine. He’ll call when he gets a chance.” Hannah tries to be a voice of reason where I’m concerned. I know I’m a bit of a hothead, but that’s my best friend. I hate it when she’s scared. I’ve walked down that path with her before.
Cara
That message I received scared the everloving fuck outta me! Ever since he came into my life, he’s been the one constant. Hearing that he was hurt sent me reeling. I know I need to calm down, but other than DJ, no one knows what my life was like before he came into it. He’s been my rock, my one constant, and hearing that he was hurt send me to an ugly, dark place.
“I’ll be okay, just a shock, y’all. And I’ll apologize in advance if DJ goes a little batshit crazy. See, I was married before and well, it wasn’t a good one. Not by a longshot. When I met Braxton, he spent the time to show me that I meant everything to him and outside of the kids, he’s my world. I’m sorry for overreacting.”
“Fuck that!” DJ states. “Those boneheaded men of ours should have known not to leave a message that didn’t say everything. And I bet when Axe finds out, he’s gonna be pissed.”
Yeah, knowing how protective he can be over me, I can only imagine how scathing his remarks will be to the guys. “I hope he’s not too hard on them. I know they’re all running on adrenaline and caffeine most likely, in an effort to help.”
“Well, I’ll be giving Hatch hell, that’s for sure,” DJ mutters. I start laughing because their relationship cracks me up. They love each other without compromise, but when she gets a bee in her bonnet, she lets it fly. He somehow manages to calm her down. Eventually.
“DJ, it’s all good. Now, how about another pitcher of margaritas?”
Rainey
My man seems to be in hot water with Ashton. She adores Levi, so I know it took a lot for her to hold back where he’s concerned. She doesn't handle seeing her girls and family suffering in any way. “What are you so lost in thought about over here?” Bristol asks coming up and sitting beside me.
“Just wondering if Ashton’s going to hand Levi his balls later,” I jokingly reply.
“Nah. She’s just pissed because he didn’t bow down to her. She’ll get over it, in time,” she teases me back.
“I don’t know, Ashton can hold a grudge.” Saying this to her, I realize that no one knows this better than she does.
“Okay, are we done having our mini meltdowns now? Cara’s old man is going to be fine. So, margaritas anyone?” Jenalyn shouts out in the form of a question, with a large mischievous grin plastering her face. You can definitely tell she’s used to being the leader of the pack.
“Jenalyn’s right, let’s margarita the shit out of this night!” DJ calls out.
“I need a pitcher,” Cara announces. “Braxton’s going to be the death of me. I swear that man is always keeping me guessing and on my toes.” She shakes her head in exasperation.
“Girl, you’re speaking my language now. Preaching to the choir here,” Jenalyn announces. “Where are those prospects? What is their job exactly if they’re not around?” Her tone is laced with dismay.
“They’re tending to the kids and keeping guard,” Ashton states, joining us. “But, I’ve got a full staff coming to take care of us. They’ll be here soon.”
Cara’s phone rings and she looks at the screen. When she answers she walks away, not allowing us to hear her conversation.
Cara
“Braxton? Are you really okay?” I ask. I hate how shaky my voice sounds right now because I’m the President’s old lady, I’m supposed to be tough as brass tacks.
“Baby, I’ll be fine. Gonna take more than that for your old man to be down for the count.” Does he seriously find this topic of conversation funny? I’m gonna filet his dick when I get my hands on him.
“Just saying; the girls all wanna kill the messenger for the delivery.” He huffs out a puff of air that I can hear from the earpiece. Him becoming annoyed with everyone makes me livid. I should’ve been given this information, but if it had been left up to him, I’d be none the wiser.
“Yeah, there was a bit of panic and I’ll deal with it because the last thing I wanted was for you to be scared like that. I was pissed. Twisted is trying to keep me from fining our guys, but I think it’d be a good reminder for them not to run off at the fucking mouth.”
“Y’all are all running on adrenaline, so can you keep that in mind? I mean, yes, it was a helluva shock, but you’re okay and everyone else is okay too.” Not sure if I’m reminding him of this fact or myself.
“Love you, baby,” he says. Even after all these years, his voice does something to me, and I immediately wish he were in front of me. First I would inspect his injuries, next I’d pop him upside the head for his hard-headedness.
“Love you, too. Did I ever tell you thanks for all you did when we first got together?”
“Many times over,” he replies. I can hear the smile in his voice and grin in response. We’ve had our ups and downs, but with him at my side, the downs haven’t been as hard to handle.
“Wish I could see you for myself so I could make sure you’re not bullshitting me about how you really are,” I tell him.
His laughter rings out at my words and I find myself fighting another grin. “I’m fine, Cara. If I’d known those jackasses were gonna panic, I’d have made sure they didn’t call. I’ll see you in a few days. Have fun with your girls.”
I hang up but take a few minutes to compose myself some more. He honestly has no clue that he is my whole world. Sure, we’ve got kids and I love them all dearly, but at the end of the day, eventually it’ll just be the two of us. We’ve built a beautiful life, one filled with laughter and love, and I don’t take that for granted.
Grabbing another pitcher of margarit
as, I head back out to the rest of the ladies, asking, “Anyone due for a refill?”

Rainey
Everyone is blitzed and having a blast. The fear and worry from earlier seems to be behind us as everyone sits back and loses themselves in good old-fashioned girl talk.
“I can’t believe your guys.” Cara’s cheeks are a bright shade of crimson.
“I’m not complaining.” I shrug my shoulders. “My guys are adventurous to say the least. Plus, we were behind locked doors when they decided we needed to test every surface of my room.” I wiggle my eyes and laugh as Bristol gags.
“Did you at least sterilize everything afterwards?” Ashton can’t help but be the mother hen. “I mean, I can’t imagine your clients would wanna walk in for a tat and see assprints on all of the surfaces.” We all burst out into uncontrollable laughter. Ashton’s fun when she’s three sheets to the wind.
“It was so clean, my sisters had no clue that the breakroom was our finishing destination,” I say with a smirk.
